Ryan Payne purchased an ancient shekel of Tyre at a state auction among a lot of about eight coins for several hundred dollars. The coin collector from Austin had no idea the purchase would land him on the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars” where he would sell the coin for $1,600. “It was the same type of coin that supposedly was given to Judas to betray Jesus,” says Payne. Widely used in ancient Jerusalem and other Middle Eastern countries, Payne believes the coin was equal to about a week’s wages for a commoner nearly 2,000 years ago. Only having seen the shekel before in books on ancient coins, Payne began to wonder if he had something special. “I had heard of them before,” he said. “I had not actually seen one up close.” He submitted the coin on the History Channel’s website and heard back from them within 30 minutes. He made the trip to Vegas and after about two hours of filming made a deal with his favorite cast member, Rick Harrison.
