Famous Celebrity Memorabilia: Elizabeth Taylor’s First Wedding Dress

By   /   April 11, 2018  /   No Comments

She was only 18 at the time, walking down the aisle in a glimmering cream wedding dress, which was the first of many. By the age of 18, Elizabeth Taylor had already become a legendary actress and Hollywood star. She would marry Conrad “Nicky” Hilton, Jr. the same year, 1950, and divorce him after only eight months later. She would walk down the aisle seven more times.

The ceremony was an event to see and be seen at, with MGM Studios boasting that there were “more stars there than in heaven.” Approximately 700 guests attended, including the classic celebrity A-listers of the time. Taylor’s dress was equally as glamorous, and gifted by MGM to the starlet herself. Legendary costume designer, Helen Rose, along with a team of 15 others, worked full-time for three months to complete the custom-made gown, which was comprised of 25 yards of shell-white satin, embellished with seed pearls and shimmering bugle beads, along with a matching 15-yard train. The dress was not unlike Rose’s typically elegant and unique creations, others previously worn by Taylor in Father of the Bride, and by Grace Kelly at her wedding to Prince Rainier III.

More than 60 years later, this one-of-a-kind collector’s piece was put on sale by Christie’s Auction House, estimated at £30,000 to £50,000. The treasured gown realized a price of more than twice that, hammering for £121,875 – or about $188,175. The original price of the gown was about $1,500.
