A recent study found that 18 percent of Americans reported using a pawn shop within the past five years to get cash. Arizonans are much more likely than the rest of the nation to turn to a pawn shop with 27 percent reporting they had taken out a pawn loan. For some the numbers were surprising, but not to pawnbroker Kirby Brown. “Thanks to the success of television shows like ‘Pawn Stars’ on The History Channel, those who have no idea what services pawnshops actually provide have become educated and curious about how pawnshops might be of benefit to them,” Brown said. Emmett Murphy, spokesperson for the National Pawnbrokers Association, was skeptical of the accuracy of the report, however, he pointed out that the number of pawn shops in this country have grown and today’s stores are attractive places to do business.
