People have pawned, bartered and exchanged for quick access to money for centuries. While technology and currency has advanced, the practice remains relevant today. Thanks to the hit TV series Pawn Stars, pawn shops are more popular than ever. Owner and star Rick Harrison says as kid he was the child of a working mom and a military father and with a lot of time on his hands he developed a passion for reading history. His thirst for knowledge and drive for success are what spurred him to create his own business. “I was a businessman for a long time before I was a celebrity and to succeed for over 20 years, as I have you have to be innovative and have a lot of perseverance,” he said. His advice to other entrepreneurs is to have a good work ethic. Harrison has also done some investing with the money he’s made and his advice is reminiscent of his pawn shop –“I do a little bit of everything,” he says. Other investors and business owners should take a cue from his work ethic and hands-on investment style, especially in a time when people are expected to be more responsible for their retirement savings and investing.
