Secret watches – sometimes referred to as hidden watches – are an all-time favorite at Van Cleef & Arpels. This brand – with rich jewelry and watch roots, has long created the “hidden” watch. The concept dates back to a period in time where it was believed that women didn’t really need to know the time, and so wearing a watch was considered somewhat rude. As such, the brand has offered a host of stunning secret watches over the decades – wherein the item looks like a stunning piece of jewelry, but opens to reveal at watch.

This year, at the recent SIHH 2016, Van Cleef & Arpels continued its tradition – unveiling the Rubis Secret watch – a cuff bracelet set with 115 Mozambique rubies weighing a total of 151.25 delightful carats. The exceptional and unique bracelet watch is also bedecked with diamonds and is a remarkable work of technical prowess and beauty. It took years for the brand to find and collect the hundreds of perfectly matched rubies, each with slightly different cuts that include oval and cushion.

The gemstones are set in 18-karat gold, and the rubies are outlined by a row of white diamonds – for an overall Art Deco motif that is incomparable in hue and structure. The watch dial, whose case is diamond adorned, is revealed via a secret side drawer that delicately opens thanks to a hidden hinge the wearer presses to reveal the watch. So precisely fit is the watch drawer that there is just a hundredth of a millimeter of tolerance between the gemstones and the drawer.
